About the Orchestra

What makes Half Moon Orchestra different? Our mission is to provide a different atmosphere than most classical orchestras. While all of our musicians are classically trained, we focus on performing a variety of genres. Our concerts have included pop, rock, classical, folk, country, and even popular soundtrack compositions.

We are one of the only orchestras of this size in the Mohawk Valley that plays 8-10 shows a year. We hope to make it a regular outing for people. Why do we do this? It’s fun! But also…

Our goal is providing accessible concerts to all people, including those who would normally not be able or interested to experience the joy of live orchestral music. Providing inclusive accommodations such as low-cost tickets, handicap seating, sensory-aware sound, and family friendly atmospheres are all things we consider at every opportunity. We want to provide live instrumental music to all people in our community.

Half Moon Orchestra was created in June, 2022 with the intention of providing the Utica area with orchestral music that appeals to the general public. It started with musicians from a local string quartet devising a plan in coordination with Frank Giotto of Giotto Enterprises. Together, they approached and ultimately partnered with the talented veteran conductor Michael DiMeo. With this new affiliation, the group was set to begin recruiting musicians, establishing a repertoire, and planning to perform together for the first time.

We were thrilled to find that our community had so many talented and willing string players that have been graciously volunteering their time to practice and perform. Thanks to our extraordinary group of musicians, our preparatory goals quickly came to fruition in July of 2022 when we held our first concert at the Oneida Lake Arts and Heritage Center. Since then, Half Moon Orchestra has continued to grow and evolve as we perform at various locations across the Mohawk Valley.
